This Sunday, March 12, the Oscars 2023 will air, bringing together the largest, brightest, and most attractive actors in Hollywood. (That would be the roof of the Dolby Theater, which has been the home of the Academy Awards since 2002).
Nevertheless, receiving an invitation to a glamorous party is not a given just because you are a Hollywood A-lister. In fact, the ceremony has already barred certain well-known figures. Then there are those who, after being invited and nominated, decide not to go, like Goldie Hawn.
Why Was Richard Gere Denied Entry to the Oscars?
For veering from the script during the 1993 awards show, Richard Gere was prohibited from future Oscar ceremonies. The Beautiful Woman actor started to speak about the Tibet-China conflict when he momentarily ignored the teleprompter.
Gere made comments about the “awful, horrendous human rights situation” that was occurring in China at the time while presenting the award for Best Art Design.
He concluded his impromptu speech by saying,
“If something miraculous and really kind of movie-like could happen here, where we could all send love, truth, and sanity to Deng Xiaoping right now in Beijing, that he would take all of his troops and take the Chinese away from Tibet and allow people to live as free independent people again.”
Gere returned to his role as a presenter after his unexpected commentary. The Academy disqualified Gere from participating in their yearly celebrations for 20 years as punishment for delaying the cue he was given. The group told GQ: “We don’t ban presenters,” and rejected allowing Gere to attend upcoming performances.
Gere meanwhile stated to the publication that “studios are interested in the potential of making enormous revenues. Yet I’m still producing the same movies I did when I first started. Short, intriguing, character- and story-driven short fiction. My life has not been impacted in any way.

When Was Richard Gere Allowed Back at the Oscars?
Gere was permitted to attend the 2003 ceremony after allegedly being banned from the Oscars for 20 years. Co-stars of Gere who starred in the Chicago movie were nominated for Oscars at the 75th Academy Awards. Also, the film was up for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay awards. While his co-stars Renée Zellweger, Queen Latifah, and Catherine Zeta-Jones received awards, Gere himself did not.
“I have apparently been rehabilitated. If you stick around long enough, it looks like they’ll forget they’ve banned you “The actor revealed his attendance that year to The Huffington Post. “I am now familiar with everyone. The closest comparison would be to attending the Golden Globes because everyone there is familiar with one another.”
The Runaway Bride star has given several awards to his peers since the 2003 Oscars.
