State Representative Letitia “Tish” Naghise of Georgia, who was serving her first term, passed away recently. Kaleb McMichen, a spokesman for House Speaker Jon Burns, Naghise passed away on Wednesday.

According to Wan Smith, a friend, and former coworker, Naghise passed away in Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital after spending several days there. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.

“She was an extraordinary servant leader, an extraordinary and multifaceted leader, who didn’t start or stop with the legislature,” said Smith, who supervised Naghise while she worked for the Georgia Conservation Voters Education Fund, an environmental advocacy organization.

The 59-year-old from Fayetteville comfortably defeated a Republican in the general election to represent Georgia’s House District 68, which comprises parts of Atlanta’s suburbs in southern Fulton and northern Fayette counties.

Smith praised Naghise, saying he was a master at making connections and a tireless worker for the Georgia Conservation Voters.

“She was a regular person, but she knew everybody,” Smith said. “No matter what part of the state we were organizing in, she knew somebody there or knew somebody who could put her in contact with someone there.”

On her website, Naghise claimed to have experience in both the paralegal and fraud examination fields. T & C Transportation Enterprises, a trucking company, was partially owned by her, as disclosed in state ethics filings. There was a Nigerian lineage in Naghise’s family.

Naghise was my dear friend and a treasured member of the Democratic Caucus,” House Minority Leader James Beverly, a Macon Democrat, said in a statement. “She made an impact from day one at the Capitol, showing up with enthusiasm and grace. She was deeply passionate about fighting for the greater good, which led her to a lifetime of public service and organizing.”

Smith claimed that while one of Naghise’s sons passed away in 2021, she is survived by her husband Charles, and another son. After Naghise’s resignation, Governor Brian Kemp decided to call for a special election.
