The Beginning of the Musician’s Professional Career
Bobby was born in New York City but spent his childhood in Miami, where his mother worked as a real estate agent and became acquainted with reggae legend Bob Marley.
He took up the piano and guitar after developing a passion for music and eventually joined the Miami band Katmandu. Star, then only 17, joined Little Richard’s band in Las Vegas and later relocated to Los Angeles to play guitar for the legend.
In 1978, he signed with a record label after years of honing his craft in dive bars. To promote the release of his self-titled debut album, he went on tour with Natalie Cole.
What You Won’t Do for Love, the album’s lead track peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been sampled numerous times.
He Kept on Singing Right Up Until the Year 2015
Caldwell followed up the success of his self-titled debut with the albums Cat in the Hat (1980), Carry On (1982), and August Moon (1983). Songwriting for artists including Amy Grant, Natalia Cole, Chicago, Peter Catera, and Boz Scaggs followed.
The singer also had success with his CD Blue Condition from 1996, and he has performed Frank Sinatra in several Rat Pack homage shows in Las Vegas.
