As was revealed in CBS’ “48 Hours: Remembering the Chowchilla K!dnapping,” a school bus driver and 26 children were abducted and held underground for 16 hours until they could escape.

Matthew Medrano, Heffington’s son, is committed to ensuring that his mother’s voice is not lost and that her story endures in the wake of her passing.

In a letter to “48 Hours,” Matthew Medrano begged the show to give Jodi’s story and her integrity a voice on behalf of young girls who have experienced feelings of fear, oppression, or neglect.

Chowchilla Survivor Jodi Heffington Tells Her Story Before De@th

She was talking about what was possibly the “Biggest K!dnapping in America” in 1976 rather than the passing of Jodi Heffington. She was among the youngsters on the bus at the time of the terrible incident when she was just ten years old.

A school bus carrying several children was k!dnapped in the small Californian town of Chowchilla during the summer of 1976 by a group of young men from wealthy families. A group of 26 kids, aged 5 to 14, and their driver went through a harrowing ordeal when they were held at gunpoint as they returned from their summer activities.

Jodi Heffington stated in an interview for the “48 Hours” episode “Remembering the Chowchilla K!dnapping” that a man in a mask and a gun approached the bus she was riding in and ordered them to open the door. She was unfamiliar with g*ns, so she immediately knew how dangerous the situation was. She was terrified the man might hurt her. As he then pressed a shotgun against her stomach.

After that, the abductors carried the nervous minors, accompanied by their bus operator Ed Ray, in two enclosed and concealed cars for over 100 miles before disembarking them one at a time. She feared the worst, thinking the k!llers had been k!lling the hostages one by one, methodically.

However, the k!dnappers buried the captives in a quarry inside an underground truck container. Unexpectedly, the children and their bus driver escaped a dreadful scenario where they felt trapped beneath. After over 16 hours beneath, they made their way out.
