Halle Bailey remembers the long hours she put in to portray Princess Ariel for Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” including some days when she spent an incredible 13 hours filming underwater. About her many days spent submerged in water on set, Bailey said in a recent interview with Edition magazine, “I pushed myself as far as I’ve ever pushed myself in life.”
She continued, “And I feel like the message from [Ariel] was to know that you’ve always had it in you,” elaborating on how she could draw inspiration from the character’s spirit to get through trying times. Director Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Into the Woods”) employed water tanks and special effects to shoot the underwater sequences, according to Variety.
Princess Ariel decides to go against her father’s wishes in the beloved 1989 animated picture to seek love with Prince Eric since she is unhappy with her life underwater. According to Bailey, the future movie takes a different, more powerful turn.

She said, “We’ve shifted that perspective of merely her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy. I’m extremely eager for my interpretation of the film.” It is much larger than that. It’s all about her: her life, her goals, her freedom, and her purpose.
She continued, “As women, we are incredible, independent, modern, we are everything and above. I appreciate Disney’s efforts to modernize some of those ideas. Bailey, who played mermaids in the pool as a child with her sister and fellow Chlöe x Halle member Chlöe Bailey, expressed her excitement to bring the red-headed mermaid to a new generation in a November interview with E! News.

After the song’s release in September, she has claimed that what “touches [her] the most” is seeing the responses of children to her performance of “Part of Your World,” adding, “It just makes me cry.” The Grammy-nominated artist continued, “It’s incredibly significant to me that all these tiny Black and Brown infants will be able to feel like they’re being represented.
If I had that when I was younger, I believe it would have drastically altered my view of who I am as a person and how I see the world. Together with Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem plays King Triton, Daveed Diggs plays Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay plays Flounder, Awkwafina plays Scuttle, and Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric in the upcoming live-action remake. On May 26, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” will be released in theaters.
