Fans of DC Comics are receiving a sneak preview of the “Blue Beetle” movie. The first trailer for the next comic book movie, which has “Cobra Kai” actor Xolo Mariduea taking flight as the superhero, has been released by Warner Bros.

In the DC comic books, Jaime Reyes, played by Mariduea, is the third person to assume the role of the Blue Beetle. In the trailer, a mystery extraterrestrial scarab hidden inside a fast food container is given to Jaime before his job interview.

When Jaime waits until he is with his family before opening the container, the scarab attaches to Jaime’s body and turns into a super suit in an unexpected twist on the common comic book theme that the title character must conceal his identity from his family and friends. They are aware that Jaime is a superhero right away in “Blue Beetle.”

The film will have a primarily Latino ensemble, including George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s family members. The Reyes version of Blue Beetle is renowned for being one of the most prominent Latino superheroes in comics.

Raoul Trujillo plays the antagonist Carapax the Indestructible Man, while Bruna Marquezine portrays his love interest, Penny. Harvey Guillén, who starred in “What We Do in the Dark,” also joined the cast, while Susan Sarandon plays Victoria Kord, the major antagonist. She is Ted Kord’s sister in the comics, who was the former owner of the Blue Beetle scarab.

James Gunn shared a post on Twitter: Come see this warm, funny, wonderful film only in theaters August 18!”

The director of “Charm City Kings” in 2020, Angel Manuel Soto, is behind the camera for “Blue Beetle,” which he is helming from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Before James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios, Warner Bros. changed the project to a theatrical release last year. The movie was previously developed as an HBO Max original feature alongside the now-shelved “Batgirl.” The current release date for “Blue Beetle” is August 18.
