In the Democratic primary election in March 2018, Johnson upset incumbent Commissioner Richard Boykin; in the general election, he faced no opposition and was reelected in 2022.
On February 28, 2023, he received 21.6% of the vote, making him the runner-up to Paul Vallas, who received 33% of the vote in the first round of the Chicago mayoral election. Johnson was elected as the 57th mayor of Chicago in a runoff election held on April 4, 2023.

Johnson taught social studies in the Chicago Public Schools system at George Westinghouse College Prep and Jenner Academy Elementary. In 2011, he joined the Chicago Teachers Union as an organizer, and in 2012, he participated in planning the city’s teachers’ strike. He also assisted in running field campaigns for the 2015 Chicago mayoral and aldermanic elections.
