Those triumphs continue to be the Jets’ lone championships. Namath joined the NFL with the Jets after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, and in the 1972 season, he led the league in passing yards and touchdowns.
He played with the New York Giants for seven more seasons before joining the Los Angeles Rams for his final campaign. He secured his legend when Namath assured his much favored Jets would win Super Bowl III before they stunned the NFL’s Baltimore Colts in one of the greatest sporting upsets.
The AFL’s first Super Bowl triumph helped dispel ideas that its teams were inferior to those of the NFL and showed they would enter the merger as equals. Namath won the Super Bowl MVP award and made history by being the first quarterback to claim a significant professional title and a collegiate national championship.
