Roof Collapse at Ohio State University Leaves 14 Injured

Authorities claimed that 14 people were hurt after a portion of a house fell near The Ohio State University on Saturday night after people climbed onto a roof that was not intended to support a large amount of weight.

The roof above a front porch on East 13th Avenue fell, but the rest of the property remained, according to Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin. His department had gotten a report of the incident at 7:40 p.m.

“The few people that were trapped, I believe, were probably unpinned,” Martin said. “It was like their leg was caught under some of the structure and some of the students lifted that off the students. So everybody was kind of out.”

Initial responders discovered ten injured people, and after transporting 14 accident victims to nearby hospitals with “various states of injuries,” Martin said they were all in stable condition.

Martin stated that between 15 and 45 students were on the rooftop, which “was not designed to have anybody on it, and it gave way,” suggesting that “it appears the roof was overloaded with students.” It was not immediately known who owned or lived in the house.

The residence is located off of Ohio State University grounds. According to the university’s website, there will be 61,677 enrolled students at the main campus in Columbus for the 2022–2023 academic year.
