Douglas Davis, better known by his stage name Doug E. Fresh, was born in Barbados on September 17, 1966. He is an American rapper, record producer, and beatboxer who is also referred to as the “Human Beat Box.”
Fresh, the father of American beatboxing in the 20th century, can replicate drum machines and various special effects with remarkable accuracy by utilizing only his mouth, lips, gums, throat, tongue, and microphone.
He founded the Get Fresh Crew in the early 1980s alongside DJs Chill Will and Barry B, eventually including rapper Slick Rick. The tracks “The Show” and “La Di Da Di” are regarded as early hip-hop classics. Mainly, “La Di Da Di” is one of the songs sampled the most throughout music history.

How Did Doug E Fresh Start His Career?
Fresh’s solo recording career started on Enjoy Records before moving on to Entertainment Records. Doug rose to fame after he and the Get Fresh Crew collaborated with the New Jersey-based record company Danya/Reality Records to create the songs “The Show” and “La Di Da Di” in 1984.
The song, given a gold certification, peaked at number four on the “Billboard” Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and seven on the UK Singles Chart. Since then, more songs have been sampled from “La Di Da Di” than virtually any other song in history
Slick Less than a year after the release of the “The Show”/”La Di Da Di” single, Rick departed the group. On July 7, 1986, Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew released “Oh, My God!,” their debut album.
The album, which peaked at #21 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, featured the singles “All The Way To Heaven,” “Lovin’ Ev’ry Minute Of It,” and “Play This Only At Night.” The sole album by Doug E. Fresh on which he did not serve as a producer is “Oh, My God!”
Fresh made an appearance in the 1986 Dutch documentary “Big Fun in the Big Town,” and in 1988, the Get Fresh Crew released their second album, “The World’s Greatest Entertainer,” which peaked at #7 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list and #88 on the “Billboard” 200 chart.
The album also included the hits “The Greatest Entertainer,” “Cut That Zero,” “Everybody Got 2 Get Some,” and “D.E.F. = Doug E. Fresh.” The single “Keep Risin’ To The Top” peaked at #4 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The Get Fresh Crew released the non-album single “Summertime” in 1989, and their song “Spirit” appeared on the “Ghostbusters II” soundtrack. Doug E. Fresh and the New Get Fresh Crew produced the album “Doin’ What I Gotta Do” in 1992, which included the hits “Bustin’ Out (On Funk)” and “If I Was Your Man,” after Fresh joined MC Hammer’s record company, Bust It Records.
He switched to the Island Records-affiliated Gee Street label in 1993, where he issued a single with the songs “I-might (Alright),” “Freaks,” and “Bounce.” Slick Rick made a cameo on the Fresh “Play” album released in 1995.
