Happy ghosts appear in Haunted Mansion, and there’s always room for one more. Disney’s remake of the classic theme park ride Haunted Mansion takes place 20 years after the first movie version, which starred Eddie Murphy. The scary and funny Haunted Mansion is where ghosts live and hang out.
This time, director Justin Simien (Dear White People), writer Katie Dippold (2016’s Ghostbusters), and producer Dan Lin (Disney’s live-action Aladdin) are ringing the requiem bell to call an all-star ensemble cast, including LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more.
The official logline for Haunted Mansion says, “Haunted Mansion is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.” Find out everything we know about Disney’s Haunted Mansion so far in the list below.

Haunted Mansion Storyline
The story of 2023’s Haunted Mansion is very similar to that of Disney’s 2003 version, and it centers on a family who moves into a new house in New Orleans that’s unhappily already inhabited by the dead.
We’ll meet Gabby, a single mother who moves into the movie’s namesake haunted home with her nine-year-old kid and then hires a tour guide, a priest, a psychic, and a historian to help rid it of ghosts, according to the official IMDB synopsis for the reboot.
We can anticipate seeing numerous characters and scenes from the famed Disneyland attraction throughout Simien’s film, including the well-known Hatbox Ghost, as with every cinematic encounter with the Haunted Mansion.
Simien said at the 2017 D23 Expo, “There was something about that ride that I felt was there in the script.” Because I’m a nerd, “I wanted to be sure all the Easter eggs are there because I’m a nerd.”
The Director Behind the Haunted Mansion Movie
Katie Dippold, who wrote the new Ghostbusters movie and The Heat, wrote the script for the movie. It was directed by Justin Simien, who also made Dear White People and the spoof horror comedy Bad Hair. Jonathan Eirich (The Two Popes, Easter Sunday) and Dan Lin (Death Note, the live-action Aladdin, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the planned live-action Lilo & Stitch from Disney) are the producers.
What Really Happened to Guillermo del Toro’s Haunted Mansion Movie?
Guillermo del Toro, who made the movies Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, said in 2010 that he would co-write and direct The Haunted Mansion.
“We want a scary movie that’s as scary as the ride. If you’re 11 years old, you can go on the ride but it’s still scary,” Disney production head Sean Bailey said at the time. “Tonally, we’re going to make a movie that is for families but is a fun and, at times, scary movie.”
Del Toro said that his Haunted Mansion would be “a thrill ride for the whole family,” but added, “it’s definitely going to be scary.” Like the original theme park attraction overseen by Walt Disney — which is half silly and half scary — the filmmaker wanted to pay tribute to “that side of the legacy.”
After D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity, Pam & Tommy) was hired to rewrite the story in 2015, Ryan Gosling (The Gray Man, Barbie) was in talks to star. By 2016, Disney had hired director Brigham Taylor, who had worked on Disney’s Tomorrowland, The Jungle Book, the live-action Lady, and the Tramp, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but that version was eventually scrapped.
The new version of Haunted Mansion was made by Lin and Eirich’s company Rideback, without del Toro’s help. Disney’s Haunted Mansion will be in cinemas on July 28.
