Author and sports journalist Rick Hummel (real name: Richard Lowell Hummel) rose to prominence with his work for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The 2007 J. G. Rick Hummel, a renowned sports journalist who covered the St. Louis Cardinals and MLB for the Post-Dispatch for 50 years, has died at 77. Hummel, who had retired the previous year, went unexpectedly asleep on Saturday at his home in the St. Louis region after a brief but ferocious illness.

On Monday, the Post-Dispatch broke the announcement, highlighting Hummel’s long service history to the newspaper. Alan Achkar, the Post-Dispatch’s executive editor, praised him as “one of the most distinguished and respected writers in the history of the paper,” citing the journalist’s good moral fiber, generosity, and collaborative spirit.
The publication would not be the same without Hummel’s contributions. It is reported that Rick Hummel died following a swift and mysterious illness, but no details about the sickness itself have been revealed. His wife Melissa and three children from his first two marriages will continue without him.
