George Maharis spent his retirement drawing in his homes in Beverly Hills. After appearing in more than 70 TV shows and movies, Maharis stopped being seen by the public. George Maharis’ Biography Reveals Shocking Truth
There were rumors that George Maharis was gαy after he was arrested in December 1967 for “lewd conduct.” A vice-squad cop said that Maharis made a move on him in a Hollywood restaurant’s bathroom. After Maharis pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace, the charge was dropped.
Maharis was caught in November 1974 for having s*x with a hairdresser in the men’s bathroom of a gas station. Maharis and Perfecto Telles, the hairdresser, were both charged with s*x perversion and put out on bond.
Maharis’s run-ins with the cops made people wonder if he was gαy. But the cops often arrested people without proof of wrongdoing on charges of s*xual perversion. So, people didn’t think that Maharis’s crimes were solid proof that he was gαy.

Until Maharis’s historian, Karen Blocher, said that Maharis was gαy in secret. Blocher said Maharis quit Route 66 because the directors found out he was gαy. She typed:
“[Producer Herbert B. Leonard] thought he’d hired a young hunk for the show, a hip, s*xy man and good actor that all the girls would go for. This was all true of Maharis, but not the whole story, as Leonard discovered to his anger and dismay. George was gαy, it turned out.”
Blocher also said that when the producers found out Maharis was gαy, they felt “[They] never trusted him again,” Blocher continued. “Maharis, for his part, started to feel that he was carrying the show and going unappreciated.”
In an interview with Route 66 News in October 2007, Maharis claimed that he left the show because of a mistake in the contract. He said that he had to leave because of health problems. “The doctor said, ‘If you don’t get out now, you’re either going to be dead, or you’re going to have permanent liver damage,’” Maharis said. He continued:
“I wasn’t interested in leaving the show. I enjoyed it; I was having a good time. I was trying to recuperate, and there was all the crap going on about how I wanted more money. It was all garbage. Some people even tried to make it like I never had hepatitis at all. But it’s all in the doctor’s reports.”
