Astrud Gilberto, the singer who was featured in Stan Getz and Joo Gilberto’s legendary 1963 version of “The Girl From Ipanema,” passed away yesterday (June 5, 2023), according to a report from The Independent that cites her son Marcelo as the source. There was no indication of what caused the deαth. Astrud Gilberto had reached the age of 83 at the time.
Gilberto was an untrained singer until she offered, on a whim, to step into the booth after her husband, Joo Gilberto, and the American saxophonist Stan Getz recorded Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes’ “Garota de Ipanema.”
Gilberto did this after her husband, Joo Gilberto, and Getz had recorded the song. The bossa nova classic turned pop standard that captivated the imagination of people all over the world was given an English translation that became an instant hit.

The Brazilian press placed the responsibility for Joo Gilberto’s affair on Astrud, which led to their divorce in 1964. Joo Gilberto had an affair while on tour.
She was nominated for three Grammys in 1965, winning one of them for Record of the Year, but she was paid very little for her work as a result of industry politics and an alleged intervention by Stan Getz. The Astrud Gilberto Album was her debut as a solo artist and garnered her another Grammy nomination the following year.
Gilberto went on to record more than a dozen solo albums for Verve and other labels. On these albums, she alternated between pop and jazz standards, Brazilian classics, original co-writes, and performing her songs in Japanese for her huge East Asian fans.
Gilberto was a diligent polyglot. She also worked with other musicians, like as Chet Baker, Quincy Jones, and even George Michael for an unusual duet in 1996. However, despite Gilberto’s growing notoriety around the world, the local press in Brazil continued to portray her in a negative light, and she did not perform in Brazil again after 1965.

Gilberto was admitted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2002, and during her acceptance speech, she revealed that she would be taking an indefinite pause from her career as a musician.
After hearing the news of her passing, the musician Sofia Gilberto, who is Astrud’s granddaughter, posted a message on social media in Portuguese, saying, “I love and will love Astrud eternally and she was the face and voice of bossa nova on most of the planet. Astrud will forever be in our hearts, and in this moment we have to celebrate Astrud.”
