By January 1975, they were practising and playing together, but they still had day jobs. They got together and made the band Talking Heads. In June, they played their first show.
Byrne quit his day job in May 1976, and the band’s three members signed with Sire Records in November. Byrne was the youngest member of the band. Jerry Harrison used to be in a band called The Modern Lovers. In 1977, he became a member of the band as a multi-instrumentalist.
With eight studio records, the band was well-reviewed and sold a lot of copies. Four records were certified gold for selling 500,000 copies, and two more were certified double-platinum for selling 2 million copies.
David Byrne worked on side projects while he was in the band. He worked with Brian Eno on the album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which was praised for being one of the first to use analogue samples and found sounds.

Byrne worked with choreographer Twyla Tharp in 1981 to use the music he wrote for his album The Catherine Wheel as the score for a ballet with the same name. The ballet had strange rhythms and words, and the music was from Byrne’s album. The same year, The Catherine Wheel was put on Broadway.
