After 30 years of marriage, Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray announced their separation in an interview published on Wednesday, July 5. They did not file for divorce and are currently still living together. We gave you an exclusive interview clip in the following article.
The couple stated they needed a change in their relationship during Tuesday’s three-hour interview they gave to The New York Times.
“I just want to have fun,” McCray stated before turning to face de Blasio and saying, “It’s not that we haven’t had fun.”
“Thank you, honey,” he expressed gratitude.
De Blasio tweeted the Times article and stated:

When de Blasio noticed they were no longer enthusiastic about their love, the couple confessed they began thinking about divorce two months ago.
“’Why aren’t you lovey-dovey anymore?’” McCray stated that he inquired. “You can’t fake it,” she said to The Times.
De Blasio acknowledged that their flame had been lost. “You can feel when things are off,” he said, “and you don’t want to live that way.”

The couple stated that they will not file for divorce and will continue to live in their Park Slope townhouse. They have indicated that they will be open to dating other people.
The two seemed excited to start their new, somewhat independent lives, at least when they were joking around.
With a deadpan expression, McCray asked the newspaper to print their phone numbers, while de Blasio stated he felt an image of himself working out would look best.
“Can I put a picture from the gym in there?” de Blasio inquired, adding that he is not a fan of online dating apps.
De Blasio was elected to the New York City Council in 2001 and won a citywide election to become a public advocate in 2009. He was elected to Gracie Mansion in 2013 after defeating City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the Democratic primary. Quinn was trying to become America’s first openly homos*xual mayor.

After two terms, de Blasio ran for President in 2020 but did not make it to Iowa. Another political return attempt failed last year when he ran for Congress but backed out before the Democratic primary. The public’s reaction to the high-profile breakup was a mix of confusion and disdain.

While de Blasio stated he would not seek online dating, sports podcaster David Roth envisioned his new single-and-ready-to-mingle appearance.
