Brittney Griner was born in Houston to parents Raymond and Sandra Griner. Her father, Raymond, served in the Vietnam War as a former Harris County sheriff.
She attended Nimitz High School in Houston, where she played basketball throughout her high school years. During her freshman year in college, she even participated in volleyball activities.
During her sophomore year, Brittney worked with the boys’ basketball team and a football coach to strengthen her legs, preparing to learn how to dunk.
Her impressive dunks were captured in a YouTube video, which gained immense popularity with over 6.6 million views during her junior season. This attention led to a meeting with NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
At Nimitz High School, Brittney played a significant role, leading the Nimitz Cougars to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game. However, they were defeated by Mansfield Summit High School with a score of 52-43.
In her senior year, she continued to showcase her dunking abilities, dunking 52 times in 32 games, including seven dunks in a single game against Aldine High School.

In 2014, Brittney co-wrote a memoir titled “In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Court” with Sue Hovey, which delves into her experiences with bullying and her journey towards self-acceptance.
How Legal Issues Affected Brittney Griner’s Love Life?
In 2014, Brittney got engaged to Glory Johnson, another WNBA player. However, in 2015, they faced legal trouble and were arrested for assault and disorderly behavior after a fight at their home in Phoenix, Arizona. Despite this, they got married the following month.
Due to the incident, both players were suspended for seven games by the WNBA and had to attend domestic violence counseling. In the same year, they announced that Johnson was expecting twins through in vitro fertilization using her eggs.
Sadly, the marriage didn’t last long, and Griner filed for an annulment shortly after the wedding, citing fraud and duress. However, the annulment request was denied. Johnson gave birth to twin girls prematurely in October 2015.
After their divorce was finalized in June 2016, Griner moved on and proposed to Cherelle Watson in August 2018. They got married in June 2019, and Cherelle later changed her name to Cherelle Griner.
