Michael Reid Perry Obituary: A Life in Rhythm

Michael Reid Perry, born on March 18, 1957, began his musical career as a youngster, with a predilection for generating rhythms on pots and pans. This early interest led him to piano and music theory studies, which culminated in a love of drumming.

Michael Perry died quietly at home, with the assistance of MAID, on August 8, 2023, after a lengthy fight with cancer, holding his beloved Gloria close.

Michael’s musical schooling was varied and rewarding. He studied the cello at Northmount Junior High School while continuing his drum studies. His skills were polished further at Newtonbrook High School, which led to an audition for the University of Toronto Jazz Ensemble.

Michael spent five years with the ensemble under the direction of Phil Nimmons. In 1976 and 1977, he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, where he was coached by the renowned Alexander Lepak. Michael’s commitment to his trade was evident when he received an Honours Bachelor of Performance Degree from the University of Toronto Faculty of Music.
