Jon Batiste’s Wife’s Health Status
When Jon Batiste’s wife Suleika Jaouad was hospitalized during her cancer treatment, and COVID prevented him from seeing her, he provided consolation in the only way he knew how: through music.
Day after day, the Grammy-winning jazz artist composed a new lullaby for Jaouad, one of which, “Butterfly,” appears on his latest album, World Music Radio.
Jaouad, a 35-year-old writer, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia for the second time in 2021. She and Batiste met at a music camp as teenagers, and after eight years together, they married in February 2022, just one day before she got a bone marrow transplant.
In a 2022 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, she expressed how much Batiste’s lullabies meant to her, saying that his melodies made her feel as if “he was right there sleeping by my bedside.”
According to Batiste, his wife is “doing great” despite her treatments and was recently able to fly paragliding over the Swiss mountains.
“We were able to do things this year that last year were impossible,” he says. “She has a level of appreciation for life and being in the world that is profound. Everything is going as great as it can go, and we just pray that it continues.”
Suleika Jaouad is facing cancer for the second time, having previously battled the disease in her twenties. Jaouad disclosed in her newsletter on December 1, 2021, that her leukemia had returned and that she was having treatment, with a bone marrow transplant planned.
