Lena Dunham Health Problems: The Heartbreaking Reality of Never Carrying a Child

Lena Dunham is an achieved (although sometimes controversial) lady. The creator and actress of The Girls went on to write the New York Times bestseller Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned.” She has launched her own plus-size fashion collection.

However, while Lena looks to be doing well in public, she is still dealing with a number of medical issues behind closed doors. Here’s everything we know about Lena Dunham’s health right now.

Lena Dunham Health Issues: She Suffers From Ehler-Danlos Syndrome

In 2019, Lena posted a photo of herself on Instagram, wearing a nightgown and with a cane. “I could choose to be embarrassed by these paparazzi pics. I mean, that’s probably the point of someone publishing them in the first place. But I’m really not,” she wrote next to the photo. The Girls star then stated that she was suffering from Ehler-Danlos disease and required a cane to help her. You can check the post below:

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a collection of inherited connective tissue disorders that vary in how they impact the body and their genetic causes, according to the Ehlers-Danlos Society. They are distinguished by joint abnormalities, skin hyperextensibility, aberrant scarring, and other structural flaws.

While the snapshot depicted a sick-looking Lena in a nightgown on her way to a doctor’s appointment, Lena stated that an hour later she was back at work in business clothing. “That’s the two-fold life of a woman with chronic illness; we still rock our dreams and goals and passions (and fashions) and we live many lives in one day,” she added.

Lena Dunham Cannot Have Children Due to a Hysterectomy

Lena appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show in April 2021, when she discussed her health problems further. This time, she addressed another issue that had been bothering her: endometriosis. When a woman has endometriosis, the tissue or lining of her uterus grows in multiple places in her body, according to Medline Plus. This can result in pain, infertility, and extremely heavy periods.

Juggling endometriosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and another inflammatory ailment she mentioned but did not elaborate on was too much for Lena’s body. At the age of 31, she decided to have a hysterectomy as well as one of her ovaries removed in trying to relieve some of her agony.

Lena, now 35, described her decision as “terrifying, not just because it was a massive surgery but because I really want to be a mom and had always thought that I was going to do it in the traditional way.”

Lena married Luis Felber in September 2021. While it is unknown whether they intend to establish a family, Lena will be unable to bear a child biologically. She elaborated on this sentiment in her Harper’s Bazaar essay, “False Labor: Giving Up on Motherhood.”
