During an Ab Workout, Brandon Siler Punched a Freshman Rb in the Face
The “Swamp Kings” docuseries premiered on Netflix on Tuesday. The four-part documentary focuses on the Florida Gators’ resurgence from 2005 to 2010 while Urban Meyer was their head coach.
Linebacker Brandon Siler, who Meyer rapidly designated as the program’s leader, is one former athlete prominently featured in the docuseries. Siler was about winning during his final campaign with the Gators in 2006.
“This was gonna be my last year,” Siler explained, discussing the 2006 season. “I was going to be leaving. So all the freshmen quickly learned how much this means to everybody. Especially the guys like me.”
“So we were in the weightroom and doing an ab workout. We had to start all over if anybody put down their feet or anything. We’re about halfway through the workout and one of the freshman running backs comes in late.”
The outcome? When a whistle blew, they resumed their ab workout. The same player’s feet touched the ground during his second attempt, which resulted in another reset. “So I tell him, ‘Hey if you drop your legs again, I’m gonna punch you in your face.'” Naturally, the player allowed his feet to contact the earth again, and Siler obeyed his word.
“I get up, punch him in his face,” Siler said.
The following year, Florida won the national championship. In the seventh round of the 2007 NFL draft, Siler’s adventure continued when he was selected.
He played 74 games, 16 of which he started, throughout his five NFL seasons, compiling an impressive 180 tackles, two interceptions, and three recovered fumbles. “This is my last chance, and y’all ain’t gonna ruin it for me,” Siler said.
Brandon Siler Career
Siler earned a scholarship to play football for the Florida Gators under coaches Ron Zook and Urban Meyer at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, from 2004 to 2006.
As a freshman who started six games, he made an early impression and was named the Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) Freshman of the Year. Zook was replaced as the head coach of the Gators for Siler’s sophomore campaign in 2005.
During that time, Siler amassed seven fumble recoveries. His performance during the 13-1 Gators’ junior season in 2006 helped them win the SEC Championship Game, and the 2007 BCS National Championship Game, and the Associated Press named him to their second-team All-SEC and third-team All-American teams.
Siler was well-known for his work ethic, vigour, and leadership on the field. Siler was predicted to be taken in the second to third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. However, in the seventh and final round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected him 240th overall.
Siler won a berth on the Charger’s roster and served as their backup long snapper. 2007 he contributed to special teams by recording the second-most special teams tackles. He continued to shine on special teams in 2008 and saw more action on defence.
Due to Stephen Cooper’s four-game suspension, he saw more playing time. Siler joined the Kansas City Chiefs on July 31, 2011. Due to an Achilles tendon rupture, he was put on the injured reserve list on August 25 and missed all of the 2011 season’s games.
In 2012, Siler participated in 16 games, four of which he started. His contract expired after the 2012 NFL season, and he was not re-signed. In 74 games over five NFL seasons, 16 of which he created, Siler amassed 180 tackles, two interceptions, and three recovered fumbles.
