Tua Tagovailoa’s catastrophic injury has remained one of the most vivid pictures of the 2022 NFL season. With the upcoming season approaching, the quarterback has taken precautions to avoid a repeat performance.
According to Cameron Wolfe of Good Morning Football, the quarterback has gained weight and added a few new wrinkles to his game. Wolfe stated it this way:
It was a rough year for him last year towards the end with the injuries but he’s come back a different player. He’s added a lot of muscle. I’m told 8 to 10 pounds of muscle. He’s training in jujitsu and also trying out a new helmet. But the reality is we won’t know if he stays healthy until the end of the year

Tua put on weight this offseason in bid to stay healthy & he’s still doing jiu jitsu training once a week. Still working to be natural with it in his fall. He discusses more here: pic.twitter.com/pqzNUH5upV

Tua Tagovailoa Weight Gain Has Raised New Concerns
Of course, the weight gain raises a new set of issues for the quarterback. The first question is if increasing weight to one’s frame may help protect the skull and brain on the inside. Although availability reigns supreme, the consequences of being overweight cannot be overlooked.
Adding weight, especially if it is muscular, may slow the quarterback down. Another point of worry is how easily muscle can be converted to fat. If a person becomes accustomed to seeing a larger number on the scale, they may fail to notice that adding a cheeseburger or two sets them back if they maintain their current weight.
Because the changes are so subtle, they may go overlooked until it’s too late. The scale is the simplest way to stop weight gain in its tracks, and living next to the wrong side of the scale is a serious problem.

Russell Wilson’s Weight Gain is a Sign for Tua Tagovailoa to Be Careful
Tagovailoa would not be the first NFL athlete to acquire weight with good intentions and end up looking worse for it. Eddie Lacy, Leonard Fournette, and Russell Wilson are just a few of the most well-known or infamous examples of bad seasons following weight increase.
