Vince Gill made his debut on the national stage in 1979 while performing lead vocals for the country rock band Pure Prairie League on their hit single “Let Me Love You Tonight” from the album Can’t Hold Back. Even though Mark Knopfler requested Gill to join Dire Straits, Gill turned down the invitation but did provide background vocals for the album On Every Street.

Gill departed Pure Prairie League in 1981 to join Cherry Bombs, Rodney Crowell’s stage band. There, he worked with Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr., who would both go on to produce many of his recordings in the future. Gill collaborated with David Grisman and other musicians to make the bluegrass album Here Today before landing a solo deal with RCA.

Despite having a few top 10 country songs with RCA, such as “If It Weren’t for Him,” “Oklahoma Borderline,” and “Cinderella,” Gill’s albums did not do well on the charts. He reconnected with Tony Brown as producer after signing with MCA Records in 1989, which led to the release of his first platinum-selling album, When I Call Your Name.

His subsequent albums Pocket Full of Gold (1991) and I Still Believe in You, which both featured hit singles with the same name that peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Country charts, were also commercially successful.

Thanks to his superb guitar playing, soulful tenor voice, and superior songwriting skills, Gill continued to create extremely popular albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s. As of 2018, Gill had earned 21 Grammy Awards, the most ever for a country musician, making him the performer with the most CMA Awards ever won.
