633 Squadron Plot
“633 Squadron” follows the Royal Air Force’s No. 633 Squadron’s daring WWII operation. In Norway, they want to destroy a heavily guarded German V-2 rocket fuel plant located beneath an impassable cliff at the end of a narrow fjord surrounded by anti-aircraft guns.
Norwegian resistance leader Lieutenant Erik Bergman reports the plant’s location to Britain. American RAF pilot Wing Commander Roy Grant leads the unit on this dangerous mission. Scottish topography resembles the Norwegian fjord where the squadron trains. Grant falls for Hilde, Bergman’s sister, despite his wartime reservations.
The Norwegian resistance must disable anti-aircraft systems before the bombing raid. When unexpected German reinforcements arrive, Bergman goes to Norway but is caught and tortured by the Gestapo.
Grant and Pilot Officer Bissell blast the Gestapo headquarters, fearing Bergman will expose vital information. Despite the victory, their aircraft is heavily damaged and Bissell is blinded.
Air Vice-Marshal Davis accelerates the rocket fuel facility attack while the anti-aircraft defences remain active. The resistance fighters are ambushed and murdered, leaving the squadron unsupported.
Grant continues despite the choice to abort. In a final brave attempt, the squadron destroys the factory, but it loses everything. Some crews dump their planes in the fjord.
Grant crashes and a local resident helps Flight Lieutenant Hoppy Hopkinson, Grant’s navigator, rescue the wounded wing commander from the flaming wreckage. Air Vice-Marshal Davis emphasizes the airmen’s bravery and sacrifice despite the squadron’s heavy casualties.
