Daniel Abed Khalife, a former soldier, managed to escape from Wandsworth jail while facing terrorism and Official Secrets Act charges. The Metropolitan Police are urgently trying to find him after his escape on Wednesday.
According to a source in Whitehall, the 21-year-old suspect is believed to have used a food truck as cover to break out of one of the UK’s largest prisons. While working in the kitchen and wearing a chef’s uniform, he held onto straps on the truck to make his getaway.
Khalife, a former member of the Royal Signals based in Stafford, was awaiting trial in the south London prison for allegedly breaching the Official Secrets Act by gathering information that could help an enemy.
Originally charged with two offenses on January 27, he was serving in the British Army at the time but was discharged in May while being held on remand for these charges.
The UK’s Terrorism Command was informed about Khalife’s escape on Wednesday morning, and an alert has been issued to all UK airports and ports.
