From Buffalo to the NFL: The Mike Williams Journey
Mike Williams was a real Buffalonian at heart. His recent passing is a big loss for the community. Except for a short time in his NFL career, Buffalo was always his home. He was born there and went to Riverside High School. Then, he played football nearby at Syracuse University.
In the 2010 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked him, and he played with them until 2013. After that, he came back home to play for the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
During this time, things were a bit rocky for him. He reunited with his coach from Syracuse, Doug Marrone. But, they had some problems in the past when Mike left the college football team after a car accident. Although they initially tried to make things work, their relationship soured.
There were some incidents, like not following the NFL’s rules about socks, showing up to games fully dressed for practice, talking about his injuries before games, and asking to be traded, among other things. By the end of 2014, the Buffalo Bills let him go.
In 2015, he got suspended by the NFL, but they didn’t say why. He didn’t play at all that year. Then, in 2016, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad, but that was his last stint in the NFL. His football career ended with 223 receptions, 3,089 yards, and 26 touchdowns.
After that, not much is known about his life until the sad news came out recently. He was working in construction. While he achieved a lot on the football field, he will always be remembered for his unique personality and his strong ties to the city of Buffalo.
