Emma Heming Willis, Bruce Willis’ wife, recently provided an update on her husband’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) symptoms. During World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, Heming Willis made an appearance on the Monday morning “Today” edition to raise awareness of the condition. Hoda Kotb, the anchor, spoke with her about how the diagnosis has affected her family’s way of life.

“What I’m learning is that dementia is hard,” Emma said. “It’s hard on the person diagnosed. It’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. When they say that this is a family disease, it really is.”

When Kotb asked Heming Willis “Does he know what’s going on? Is that something that he is aware of?”, she responded, Hard to know. It’s hard to know.”

Some signs of FTD are trouble speaking, trouble with motor skills like walking, and changes in attitude and behavior. The disease affects the frontal part of the brain, which is in charge of self-awareness. This could explain why Willis finds it hard to understand the condition. Heming Willis, who calls herself her husband’s “care partner,” said that despite the news, there is still a lot of happiness in her family.

“There’s so many beautiful things happening in our lives,” she said. “It’s just really important for me to look up from the grief and the sadness so that I can see what is happening around us. Bruce would really want us to be in the joy of what is. He would really want that for me and our family.”

The diagnosis led to Willis’ family announcing his retirement from acting last year.

How is Frontotemporal Dementia Diagnosed?

The condition frequently manifests as bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, sometimes known as ALS, said Dickinson, making the diagnosis challenging. According to her, it may take over four years for someone to receive an accurate diagnosis.

“We’re talking unexplained changes in how a person is in the world,” Dickinson stated. “Someone who speaks well has difficulty organizing their thoughts into complete sentences, may misunderstand a word, or has difficulties at work, either making poor decisions or failing to complete tasks.”
