As a player, Scheyer captained the 2009–10 Duke Blue Devils, who won the 2010 NCAA Basketball Championship, as a college All-American squad. He also led his high school team to an Illinois state basketball championship as a high school All-American.
He was a productive scorer in high school and later led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in a number of statistical categories, such as free-throw percentage, three-point attempts per game, and assists-to-turnover ratio.
He led his team to a state championship in 2005 and was crowned Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2006. He is the fourth-leading scorer in high school basketball history in Illinois. In commemoration of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament’s 100th anniversary that year, a group of former players and coaches selected Scheyer as one of the 100 Legends of the IHSA Boys Basketball Tournament.
He made Duke his institution of choice, where he transitioned from shooting guard to point guard toward the end of the 2008–09 campaign and won the 2009 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament Most Valuable Player award. High School Career
By the time Scheyer was about to enter high school, it was clear that he had potential, and many people urged his parents to relocate so that he could attend a high school with a renowned basketball program. He was advised to make the change in order to increase his chances of success.
With 3,034 points, Scheyer ranks fourth among all scorers in Illinois history. He is also the only player in state history to end his career with career highs in points (4th), rebounds, assists (6th), and steals (7th).
He received 217 votes, compared to 17 for the second-place finisher, to win the title of Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2006. He was also a high school All-American, a two-time Gatorade state Player of the Year, and a three-time All-State pick.
He was known for being an excellent 3-point shooter, a solid defensive rebounder, and a star in big games. He was referred to as “one of the greatest Illinois high school players of all time” by ESPN when he was named to the Illinois First Team for the decade.
