American singer and songwriter Omar Apollo. On May 20, 1997, Omar Apolonio Velasco was born. His parents, both of whom are from Mexico, also had various jobs to help support their family. Apollo got his start in poverty.
When he was 12 years old, he begged his parents for a guitar due to his early passion for music. His parents purchased him an amp-less electric guitar. Omar Apollo Discusses His ‘Heartbreaking’ Catholic Shame as a Gay Child
Apollo’s extremely popular debut indie album, Ivory, was released in October 2020 and rapidly earned a devoted fan following by singing about “betrayal, heartbreak, lust, happiness, anxiety, depression” and everything in between.
The “Evergreen” singer opened up on growing up homos*xual in the Mexican Catholic society in a new interview with GQ. “All the rules, man,” he remembered. “Can’t be gay, can’t cuss, can’t do drugs. I’m just like, ‘What am I supposed to do?’ It’s terrible. Really heart-breaking.”
He added: “I was way more aware [than] my siblings of how I looked. They didn’t care but I was always… [it was] probably like the gay side of me.”
He was eager to point out, however, that aside from the constraints of his religious upbringing, he does not want to be defined by his status as a gay Mexican man. “I get it for sure,” he said. “I just don’t think about it like that.”
Apollo has expressed similar sentiments in prior interviews. He told The Guardian last year that he would “rather just make music and talk about what I want to talk about.”
Although he had heard “homophobic s**t” in his hometown and been called “slurs” as a child, the Grammy-nominated singer had yet to see anything negative about his gay love songs on the internet.
Away from the charts, the 25-year-old artist has developed a reputation for his shamelessly colorful fashion sense, experimenting with everything from painted nails to crop tops.
Last year, Apollo became entangled in the toxic discourse around celebrity queerbaiting, which targeted celebrities such as Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, and Kit Connor. After some accused him doing the same, he responded with a tweet that said, “No, I be sucking d**k, from the back 100 percent.”

In an interview with Variety, he simply replied, “I said what I said. To be honest, I didn’t even think about it. I was at a dinner and I saw the tweet and answered, then ate dinner.”
“At the end of the dinner, I looked at my phone and I was like, ‘Oh no’. It was so funny, my friend’s dad saw it and I was like, ‘Oh no, that’s kind of embarrassing’. But it was great. He thought it was really funny.”
Apollo has made an effort to keep his personal life discreet, with one acquaintance recalling on the Like A Virgin podcast a year ago that the star dated fellow singer Frank Ocean for three years. Some say Ivory is about their romance and its inevitable end.
