Survival of the Thickest Season 1 Recap
We get to see Mavis develop over the first season of the show as she starts to create her business from the ground up. When she is hired as Natasha Karina’s stylist in the 1990s, she receives her first significant break. From that point on, Mavis is thrown into a strange adventure as she starts to realize who she is: a stylist who celebrates her clients’ unique bodies rather than forcing them to fit into the standards society tries to impose.
There is romance in the mix, even though Mavis’s path of self-discovery and refusing to settle for fine is the main love story of the season. The romantic triangle involving Mavis, Jacque, and Luca—a lovely Italian man who works for an organization that resettles refugees—on the program is highly convoluted.
Mavis and Luca start dating right away since they click, but things become a little more tricky when Jacque returns and makes an effort to win Mavis back. As the season draws to a close, Jacque visits Mavis’s father to request permission to propose, just as Luca must fly back to Italy to resume his job.
In the season finale, Jacque surprises everyone by proposing to Mavis, who unexpectedly accepts, almost derailing her developing romance with Luca. Jacque soon reveals his true colors, and Mavis ends their relationship permanently.
Despite her initial attempts to persuade herself that good enough was acceptable, being in Jacque’s vicinity once more makes her realize that they are still lacking the element that unites them as soulmates, and she sends him on his way.
After ending her relationship with Jacque, Mavis informs Luca about the situation and how she came to understand she loves him. Luca, who was understandably rattled by Mavis’ confession, tells her he needs some time. It appears that this will be where our conversation ends. There is one more twist, though!
After hanging up the phone, Luca hears a tap at his door. Mavis surprises him by showing up at his house using the plane ticket he gave her earlier in the season as a grand gesture. The season ends when the couple gives each other a passionate kiss.
If a second season of the program isn’t in the cards, the first season of Survival of the Thickest does a pretty good job of delivering an incredible story that closes with a sense of completion and leaves the door open for future adventures!
