Catherine Bush CBE, is an English singer, composer, record producer, and dancer. She became the first female artist to reach UK number one with a self-written song in 1978 when, at the age of 19, her breakthrough single “Wuthering Heights” spent four weeks atop the UK Singles Chart.
Since then, Bush has released 25 UK Top 40 singles, including the Top 10 blockbusters “The Man with the Child in His Eyes,” “Babooshka,” “Running Up That Hill,” and “Don’t Give Up” (a collaboration with Peter Gabriel).

Kate Bush’s Early Life
Robert Bush (1920–2008), an English general practitioner, and Hannah Patricia (née Daly) (1918–1992), an Irish staff nurse and the child of a farmer in County Waterford, had Bush on July 30, 1958 in Bexleyheath, Kent.
She grew up in East Wickham, which is close to Welling and Bexleyheath, in a 350-year-old former farmhouse with her older brothers, John and Paddy. Bush comes from a creative family; her father played the piano for fun, her mother was an amateur traditional Irish dancer, Paddy made musical instruments, and John was a poet and photographer.
Involved in the regional folk music scene were both brothers. Her upbringing was Roman Catholic. Bush practiced karate at the Goldsmiths College dojo where her brother John served as a dojo instructor. Her squeaky kiai earned her the nickname “Ee-ee” there.
At age 11, Bush began teaching herself how to play the piano thanks to the musical influence of her family. She also studied the violin and performed on the organ in a barn behind her parents’ home. She started writing songs right away, ultimately adding her own lyrics.
Bush is recognized as the first musician to commission the creation of a music-specific headgear with a wireless microphone. In order to avoid using a hand microphone and have both hands free while performing on stage with her rehearsed expressionist dance choreography, in 1979 for her Tour of Life, she combined a compact microphone with a homemade structure made of wire clothes hangers. Later, other musicians like Janet Jackson, Madonna, and Peter Gabriel used her concept.
