Friendly cat Wisp frequently appears in the Nintendo video game “Animal Crossing.” Wisp is a mysterious figure that haunts the player’s village at night and has an alluring, ethereal appearance. Wisp is a ghostly, translucent cat, unlike many of the other animals that may be seen in the game.
His endearing and slightly spooky manner provides the happy “Animal Crossing” universe with a distinctive edge. Wisp is renowned for his enigmatic journeys in which participants assist him in finding missing spirit pieces or in granting certain wishes in exchange for worthwhile rewards. Those who enjoy “Animal Crossing” have grown to admire this ghostly kitty.
Who is Wisp Cat?
When Rags to Riches Animal Rescue president Dominique Amerosa received a call about a stray Persian cat in her Tampa, Florida neighborhood, she assumed it was just another neutered male cat. At a vaccination session, the vet even verified the cat’s gender. Three weeks later, however, the cat, who was then given the name Gertrude, “had a little Wisp.”
Wisp, a roughly 10-week-old Persian cat with a distinctive appearance and a communicative demeanor, has amassed over 50 million likes and nearly 800,000 followers on TikTok.
Some people have called her “scrungly.” A used napkin for others. “She looks like she just woke up or like she’s a mad scientist,” Amerosa continues. Which is rather typical of Persians that age, I suppose.

Wisp’s diet, however, contributes to her cutely messy appearance. According to Amerosa, Wisp can only consume a watered-down slurry, so she constantly stuffs her face with food, which causes the white fur around her mouth to turn orange.
Along with six foster dogs and a few foster kittens (the Rags to Riches Animal Rescue in total looks after over 60 cats and close to 30 dogs), Wisp spends her days lounging and consuming bottled water in Amerosa’s care at the shelter.
While Lilac, a cat the charity recovered from an interstate and who often “hates cats,” has grown fond of Wisp, Gertrude “doesn’t socialize too much with Wisp,” according to the group. I saw her grooming Wisp inside of her tiny prison.

How Did Wisp End Up at Rags to Riches?
She’s sort of an “oopsie-daisy” baby. Before Wisp was born, according to Amerosa, other Persian cats suddenly began to be discarded by an unidentified perpetrator all around her area. Receive a call about a cat, go rescue it, return home, and then she’d get a call about another. It turned into a terrible cycle.
One of the Persians she saved was Wisp’s mother; she was introduced to her by someone who claimed he was a boy named “Gerald.” Gerald was bashful and just a few of the cats was fixed, so Amerosa didn’t want to play any more games and noted the gender.
She looked after the cats for a few weeks before discovering a solitary white kitten when she got home. “I go in there and (Wisp)’s just little princess on the pillow. I was like, ‘Wow, who popped that out because the rest are definitely boys because they got neutered,” Amerosa said. “So, Gerald turned into Gertrude.”
