Manny Coto was born on June 10, 1961, in Havana, Cuba. The director and his mother, Norma, were forced to move to Orlando, Florida, where he grew up and attended school.

Although there is no information about his father, he is not his parents’ only child. He has two further brothers and sisters. His sister is Normi, and he has a brother named Juan Carlos, as well as eight nieces and nephews.

On Sunday, July 9, 2023, his family confirmed his death to Deadline, stating that he died of pancreatic cancer. According to his relatives, he had been sick for almost 13 months.
