In December of 2012, Dawes got engaged to instructor Jeff Thompson. Thompson was a teacher at Potomac, Maryland’s The Heights school. On May 25, 2013, Dawes became a Catholic, and they were married.
As of January 22, 2018, the couple has four children: Quinn, Kateri, and the twins Dakota and Lincoln. Dawes revealed that before getting pregnant with her twins, she had a nearly deadly miscarriage.
Dominique Dawes Biography
On November 20, 1976, Dominique Margaux Dawes was born in Silver Spring, Maryland. When she enrolled in lessons and began training with Kelli Hill at the age of six, she experienced artistic gymnastics for the first time. Hill went on to become her career’s coach.
Before entering Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, and eventually graduating from Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Dominique attended Takoma Park Middle School in Montgomery County, Maryland. After enrolling at the University of Maryland, College Park, she graduated in 2002 with a BA in communications.
Following her Olympic experience, she started a career in entertainment, making appearances in music videos, advertisements, and as a model. Since then, she has taken on a variety of professional and charitable activities.
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition has been co-chaired by her and Drew Bree since 2010. She now works as a motivational speaker on youth issues, is on the advisory board of Sesame Workshop’s Healthy Habits for Life program, and is a gymnastics television commentator. She also supports young women in athletics.

Dominique Dawes’ Family
Dominique was born to Loretta and Don Dawes and had two siblings, Danielle Dawes-Thompson and Don Dawes Junior. The Olympian is married and mother. She’s a terrific athlete, but she also impressed us as a wife and mother who earned a gold medal.

Dominique Dawes’ Gymnastics Career
At ten years old, Dawes was competing as a junior elite. In 1988, she participated in her first U.S. National Championships and finished 17th in the junior all-around event. She was sent to Australia in 1989, when she was twelve years old, to compete in the Konica Grand Prix, her first international event.
Dawes was enjoying success on a national and worldwide scale by the early 1990s. At the 1990 U.S. National Championships, she finished third in the junior division’s all-around competition.
During the 1992 USA vs. Japan dual meet, 15-year-old Dawes was greeted with a standing ovation following a vigorous floor routine that brought back the back-to-back tumbling routine that Soviet star Oksana Omelianchik had popularized.
She received a perfect 10 from the judges, who were equally thrilled. Throughout 1991 and 1992, Dawes made significant progress on the national and international scene despite not being a member of the 1991 World Championship team.
Still, Dawes would close the year with a flourish. She outperformed opponent Shannon Miller at the National Championships, winning the all-around and each of the four event finals. It was the first time a gymnast had won the entire tournament since 1969.
At the World Team Championships in Dortmund, Germany, she went on to guide the American team to a silver medal while earning the third-highest all-around score.
