Hulu aired a miniseries last year about the famed ‘texting suicide’ case, starring Maleficent’s Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter. The Girl From Plainville, based on the same-named Esquire investigation, was released in July 2022, but it’s still accessible to view on Amazon Prime.
The series’ announcement comes just months after a Discovery Plus program captivated audiences. The two-hour special, titled Michelle Carter: Love, Texts, and Death (which is also available on Prime Video), looked at the suicide of 18-year-old Conrad Roy and the ensuing trial of his 17-year-old lover, Carter, who was found guilty of his manslaughter.
But, as we reflect on the events that led up to Roy’s death, we wonder, where is Michelle Carter now?
Where is Michelle Carter Now?
Carter has kept a low profile and avoided the public glare after being released from prison early owing to good behavior. She may have returned to live with her family in Plainville, as she was seen performing yard work outside her home for the first time since leaving jail in April 2022. Carter was wearing a maroon ‘Falmouth’ hoody, black shorts, beige walking-style boots, and short bleached blonde hair in the photos published by the New York Post.
The now-25-year-old is also no longer on probation, according to a representative for the Massachusetts Probation Service, who confirmed to MassLive on August 8, 2022, that it terminated on August 1, 2018.
One of the key terms of Carter’s probation was that she could not benefit from her story. That is no longer the case now that it has ended, which means she is no longer bound by any of the previous constraints.
All social media searches for Michelle Carter turn up empty. Given the high-profile nature of the case, which drew international media attention, it’s likely the 25-year-old avoids all internet engagement. Carter may also have changed her name since being released from prison.

What Happened in the Case of Michelle Carter?
Conrad Roy III’s body was discovered in his truck, parked outside a superstore in Massachusetts, on July 13, 2014 – he’d murdered himself by attaching a hose from a generator and filling his pickup with carbon monoxide. Roy, an honor roll student, has been suffering from anxiety and despair.
However, throughout the inquiry, officials learned Roy had sent a series of texts to his long-distance girlfriend, Michelle Carter, in the weeks preceding his death. Carter persuaded Roy to terminate his life in the passages.
Carter and Roy first met in 2012, while both were on holiday with their families in Florida. Despite only being a few towns apart, they maintained a relationship mostly through messages.
Michelle Carter texted Roy on the day of his suicide: “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action.”
Carter wrote in subsequent texts, “You just need to do it,” and “No more pushing it off, no more waiting.” Another of Carter’s texts said, “If you want it as badly as you say you do, it’s time to do it today.”
Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter seven months after his suicide, in February 2015.
What Was Michelle Carter’s Sentence?
Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter at her trial and sentenced to two and a half years in prison, which was later reduced to 15 months. Carter was freed early in January 2020 after serving only 11 months of her sentence.
What Was the Michelle Carter Documentary About?
The two-hour documentary was described in a press release as an effort to “delve into the complicated relationship between Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy using an extensive archive of texts and online activity between the two teenagers, including video diaries from Conrad himself that provide a better glimpse into how he was struggling prior to his death.”
The video also examined how Michelle Carter’s texts put her “at the center of a national controversy.”
According to the press release, “In this landmark case, a court decides whether words could do more than hurt. Could they be so criminal that they would lead a troubled young man to his death?”

Has Michelle Carter Spoken Out About the Upcoming Documentary Regarding Her Case?
Carter has yet to publicly address either the Hulu miniseries or the HBO documentary on her case. However, in March 2022, her attorney, Joseph P. Cataldo, told PEOPLE, “There will come a time for Michelle to speak publicly, but now is not that time.”
HBO also aired its own documentary, I Love You, Now Die, about the trial in 2019.
