As a member of the original London cast of the musical Hair in 1968, Curry played his first full-time role. Curry remembered his initial interaction with the project:
I’d heard about the play because I lived on Paddington Street, off Baker Street, and there was an old gym a few doors away. I saw Richard O’Brien in the street, and he said he’d just been to the gym to see if he could find a muscleman who could sing. I said, “Why do you need him to sing?” [laughs] And he told me that his musical was going to be done, and I should talk to Jim Sharman. He gave me the script, and I thought, “Boy, if this works, it’s going to be a smash.”
Curry practiced the role initially speaking with a German accent and having peroxide blonde hair, then switching to an American accent. He says he decided to play Dr. Frank-N-Furter with an English accent after hearing an English woman ask, “Do you have a house in town or a house in the country?” and concluded, “Yes, [Dr. Frank-N-Furter] should sound like the Queen,” in a March 2005 interview with Terry Gross of NPR’s Fresh Air.
Curry initially believed the character to be just a doctor working in a lab coat. But at director Sharman’s suggestion, the character changed into a transvestite with an upper-class Belgravian accent and a demonic mad scientist.
Curry’s June 1973 London premiere was a critical success, with one reviewer praising his “garishly Bowiesque performance as the ambis*xtrous doctor.” This shift persisted in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 film adaption that elevated Curry to a cult following and made him a household figure.
Up until 1975, he carried on portraying the role in New York City, Los Angeles, and London.
