Tom Cruise’s Dating History and Past Relationships
There is little doubt that his prior romances are worth examining. Continue reading to find out more about Cruise’s dating history, which includes Cher!
Rebecca De Mornay
The camaraderie between Cruise and his “Risky Business” co-star was not only for the cameras. Despite being in a relationship with actor Harry Dean Stanton, De Mornay and Cruise began an intensive romance during the making of the 1983 film. Curtis Armstrong, the pair’s “Risky Business” co-star, said in his biography, “Revenge of the Nerd,” that the relationship on set was difficult at times.
“I suspect that most of Harry Dean’s great qualities were lost on Tom, who, I think, was beginning to regard him as a guest overstaying his welcome. It must have been a little galling to have your heart set on f*cking your costar, and just when you think you’re starting to make headway, her significant other comes popping up out of a trap like a lanky, amiable Banquo’s ghos,” Armstrong remarked (via The Hollywood Reporter).
De Mornay and Cruise’s relationship lasted until roughly 1985. De Mornay opened up about her romance with the “Top Gun” star in a 2018 interview with Celebrity Page, telling the publication, “I will say that I thought he was very annoying when we first started [filming] . . . He came to grow on me because we wound up together for two and a half years after that film.”
Cher
One of Cruise’s most memorable romances, though brief, was with music superstar Cher. According to People, the two met for the first time during Madonna and Sean Penn’s wedding in 1985, but they got to know each other better at a White House function. “Then a bunch of people who were dyslexic were invited to the White House, and Tom and I are both dyslexic . . . there was definitely a connection,” she told the news site.
Though it’s unclear how long Cruise and Cher’s affair lasted, the “Believe” singer told Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in 2013 that their romance “was pretty hot and heavy for a little minute,” and that Cruise was clearly in her top five list of lovers.
Mimi Rogers
In 1986, Cruise met his first wife. The two have conflicting tales of how they first met, with Rogers stating that a common friend linked them up and Cruise claiming that Rogers was dating someone else when they met. Regardless of how they met, their love took off quickly, and they married a year later in a private ceremony in May 1987.
Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist, is undoubtedly one of the most influential people in introducing Cruise to the contentious belief system that he has since enthusiastically adopted. Throughout their marriage, information about Cruise and Rogers’ relationship were continually rumored, coinciding with the actor’s growing reputation with films like “Cocktail” and “Rain Man.” The couple quietly divorced in 1989 and announced their divorce in January 1990.
Though Rogers and Cruise have a good friendship now, they didn’t always agree after their divorce. Rogers talked severely about her marriage to Cruise in a 1995 interview with People, telling the publication, “You cease to be an individual. . . . No matter what the article is, it’s ‘Tom Cruise’s wife. . . .’ Waiting for the moment when I don’t have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore.”

Nicole Kidman
In 1989, around the time Cruise divorced Rogers, he met Kidman while filming “Days of Thunder.” Cruise later revealed, “My first reaction to meeting Nic was pure lust… It was totally physical.” The couple married in a private ceremony in Colorado just months after meeting in December 1990.
After acting in the 1992 film “Far and Away,” the couple adopted a baby girl, Bella Kidman Cruise, shortly after she was born on December 22, 1992. Bella was adopted after Kidman suffered a miscarriage, which she discussed in a 2007 interview with Vanity Fair.
“From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies . . . And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that’s when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella,” she explained to People. Three years later, on January 17, 1995, Kidman and Cruise adopted their second child, a boy called Connor Kidman Cruise.
For most of the ’90s, the two were one of Hollywood’s most powerful couples. They would reunite on screen again in 1999, co-starring as lovers in Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut,” but their marriage would soon fall apart. The couple announced their divorce in February 2001.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the divorce filing cited “difficulties inherent in divergent careers” as the reason for the break, however many assumed that the split was partially attributable to the couple’s religious beliefs. “Scientology had NOTHING to do with this,” the couple’s longtime publicist, Pat Kingsley, insisted at the time.
Penélope Cruz
Cruise and Cruz met on the set of “Vanilla Sky” in 2000 and began dating in 2001. While there was media speculation that the couple was expecting a child and planning a wedding, nothing of the sort occurred, and their relationship remained mostly private.
Cruise and Cruz called it quits in March 2004, with a source telling People, “The relationship just ran its course and they decided not to be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore. Through most of the relationship, they were both shooting movies in separate parts of the world.”
Nazanin Boniadi
Despite the fact that Cruise’s relationship with Boniadi was brief, it was later found to have occurred under peculiar circumstances. Boniadi was one of several performers duped by Scientologist leaders into auditioning for a “special project” that required a makeover, training, and secrecy agreements. According to reports, the effort was basically a mission by organization executives to locate Cruise another partner following his divorce from Kidman.
Boniadi was chosen as Cruise’s girlfriend in 2004, and the couple moved in together within a month. However, the connection ended following a meeting with Cruise and Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige.
According to Business Insider, their brief romance ended due to a misunderstanding between Boniadi and Miscavige. “Overcome by a severe headache, Nazanin had a hard time understanding Miscavige, which infuriated him. The next day, Cruise — inches from her face — pounded on the table and screamed at her for insulting the head of the church,” Alex Gibney stated in the HBO documentary “Going Clear.”
“Two weeks later, church henchman Tommy Davis delivered the news to Boniadi that her relationship with Cruise was over,” according to the report.
Katie Holmes
After his divorce from Boniadi, Cruise met Holmes in April 2005 and began dating the “Dawson’s Creek” star the same month. Only one month into their relationship, Cruise famously confessed his love for Holmes in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in May 2005, and many people still identify with the actor even years later. Holmes transitioned from Catholicism to Scientology in June 2005, and the couple married the following month.
Holmes and Cruise revealed in October 2005 that they were expecting their first child together, and Suri was born on April 18, 2006. The couple, called “TomKat,” eventually married in November 2006 and received extensive media coverage throughout the marriage.
Despite their outward appearance, the couple’s relationship was deteriorating behind the scenes. Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in June 2012, with her rep telling outlets at the time (via Us Weekly), “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
A representative for Cruise, on the other hand, issued a statement that said, “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.”

Hayley Atwell
On the filming of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” in 2020, Cruise encountered Atwell. Though the pair has neither confirmed nor denied being in a relationship, speculations of a romance between the costars have circulated. According to The Sun, the two started dating soon after meeting on-site but kept their romance private. They had an on-again, off-again relationship until June 2022, when they called it quits.
A source close to the two told The Sun, “They get on really well, and have fantastic chemistry, which is why they decided to quietly give the relationship another try earlier this year. But what was working behind closed doors didn’t work out so well when it was made public, and the fanfare around them as a couple exploded again . . . They have now decided they are better as friends.”
