What Happened in Casey Anthony’s Trial?

CNN reports that Caylee Anthony was last seen on June 16, 2008, but her parents, George and Cindy Anthony, were not notified that their daughter was missing until July 15, 2008, when they found out that her car had been seized and that there was an unpleasant smell emanating from it.

After Cindy lied to the police about where her daughter was, she contacted 911, and the following day, Anthony was arrested on charges of child negligence, making false statements, and impeding an investigation.

After a five-month search by law authorities, Caylee’s skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area near the Anthony family’s Orlando home on December 11, 2008.

Human remains were discovered in the trunk of Anthony’s car two months earlier, in October 2008, prompting a grand jury to indict her on charges of capital murder, according to CNN. Tony entered a not-guilty plea.

In May 2011, the trial got underway. According to the prosecution, Anthony put her daughter in the car trunk after using duct tape and chloroform to suffocate and render her unconscious.

The defense contended that after Caylee drowned in the Anthony family pool, Casey’s father George became alarmed and informed Casey that they needed to hide her death. Jose Baez, Anthony’s defense attorney, also claimed that George had sexually assaulted Casey when she was a little girl. CNN reports that George refuted these claims.

Casey was found not guilty on July 5, 2011, by a 12-member jury of first-degree murder, severe child abuse, and severe manslaughter of a child. She served jail time after being found guilty on four charges of giving false information to law police.
