Melissa Gilbert Career
Gilbert first appeared on television in numerous advertisements, one of which included Lorne Greene (the father of Michael Landon on Bonanza) and promoted Alpo dog food. Leslie Landon, Landon’s daughter, was a fellow student.
Leslie was the one who notified her that she had been cast as Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, having been chosen from among more than five hundred child actors. When the pilot was filmed in 1973, it did well in the ratings.
After nearly a year, Gilbert started shooting the show. Gilbert’s adoptive father passed away, and she grew quite close to the Landon family. But after it was made public that Michael Landon had an affair with Cindy Clerico, the teenage makeup artist on Little House, a split formed between Landon and Gilbert.
Following the conclusion of Little House during the 1983–84 season, Gilbert and Landon had little communication. After learning of Landon’s illness seven years later, she was called by his family and, after learning of his condition on May 9, 1991, she paid him a sincere visit after he had discussed his pancreatic cancer on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
She spent the afternoon with Landon, who was by that point bedridden, in his Malibu house. Landon passed away after a week. On October 6, 1995, Gilbert gave birth to a son with her second husband Bruce Boxleitner, whom they named Michael in honor of Landon.
