Early Life of Bobby Petrino
Born in Lewistown, Montana, Robert Patrick Petrino was raised in Helena and graduated from Capital High School in 1979. He studied at Carroll College in his hometown and earned a degree in physical education with a math minor in 1983.
He played quarterback for the Fighting Saints while attending Carroll, and in 1983 he began his coaching career there as a graduate assistant. Carroll’s head coach at the time was his father, Bob Petrino Sr. That was his position from 1971 to 1999.
Coach Bobby Petrino is a well-known figure in American football. The former head coach of the Missouri State Bears was Bobby Petrino. He was the head coach of the Louisville Cardinals football team from 2014 until he was fired during the 2018 season.
He held that position from 2003 until 2006. From 2008 to 2011, Petrino was the football team’s coach at the University of Arkansas. He was dismissed from that position in the spring of 2012 for failing to disclose an extramarital affair with an athletic department staffer.

Bobby Petrino Career
Following a year at Carroll, he transferred to Weber State College in the Big Sky Conference, where he worked under head coach Mike Price as a graduate assistant coach of quarterbacks. In 1985, Petrino took a job as offensive coordinator at his alma mater.
Carroll led the top-ranked NAIA football offense in both of his two seasons in that role. After that, he spent two seasons coaching receivers for Price at Weber State in 1987 and 1988.
Under new head coach John L. Smith, Petrino coached the quarterbacks for a year at the University of Idaho in 1989 before being elevated to offensive coordinator for the next campaign. He advanced to Division I-A (now FBS) in 1992, taking a position at Arizona State University in the Pac-10 Conference as the quarterbacks coach.
Under head coach Bruce Snyder, he managed the growth of future All-American quarterback Jake Plummer during his two seasons at ASU. Plummer went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL.
In 1998, Smith relocated to Louisville, and Petrino joined him as the offensive coordinator. During his one season there, the Cardinals won six more games than the 1997 campaign and finished first in Division I-A in both scoring and total offense.
They also saw the most positive turnaround of any I-A football team. After graduating from college, Petrino spent three years coaching in the NFL. A 2022 article on Petrino’s career at Arkansas in The Athletic states that Petrino expressed interest in moving to Fayetteville to Jeff Long, who was scheduled to officially succeed Frank Broyles as athletic director at Arkansas following the 2007 season.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and an alumnus of Arkansas, was urged by Long to approach Blank for permission to speak with Petrino since he was unwilling to wait until after the NFL season.
Petrino’s agent indicated that if Petrino resigned from the Falcons during the season, Long would be free to speak with him, but Blank declined the idea. Long met Petrino at an Atlanta law office, and Petrino took a leave of absence long enough to formally stand down as head coach of the Falcons.
