Born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 14, 1974, Shawntae Harris spent much of her childhood on the West Side of the city. Shawntae was raised in two different homes since her mother, Beverly Calloway, drove a city bus, and her father, David Ray McCoy, was a businessman. Despite their never being married, Shawntae was raised by both parents.
She spent her sophomore and junior years at Kenwood Academy, located in the Hyde Park-Kenwood area on the South Side. During her enrollment, she also participated in track and basketball.
She completed her schooling at the Academy of Scholastic Achievement, a charter school established to support at-risk kids, in 1992 after graduating from Kenwood Academy.

Da Brat’s Personal Life
After years of keeping her relationships and s*xuality totally hidden from the public, Da Brat eventually came out on Instagram in March 2020, revealing she was seeing businesswoman Jesseca Dupart.
As the creator and CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, which brings in millions of dollars annually, Jessica is a thriving businesswoman. Da Brat and Dupart tied the knot in Georgia in February. In July 2023, the couple gave birth to a son.
Legal Problems/Incarceration
Da Brat was assaulted during a Halloween celebration at Atlanta’s Studio 72 nightclub in October 2007. After a furious altercation, Da Brat attacked the hostess from behind and smacked her in the face with a rum bottle as she was leaving to get her manager.
Police took Da Brat into custody. She was given a sentence of three years in prison, seven years of probation, and 200 hours of community service after entering a guilty plea to counts of aggravated assault in court.
She was given a work release in May 2010 when she was first freed from custody, and on February 28, 2011, she was given her full freedom. The attack victim received a $6.4 million award in February 2014 to compensate her medical expenses and potential future wage loss.
Da Brat started a YouTube web series titled “Brat Chronicles: In Transition” on life after the ordeal after being released from prison. She collaborated on the “Motivation” remix alongside Kelly Rowland and Lil Wayne in 2011.
