The Boston Celtics’ general manager, Danny Ainge, traded the team’s first overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft to the Philadelphia 76ers in an attempt to obtain a valuable second-draft pick and retain Tatum as his primary objective.
With the third overall pick they acquired from Philadelphia, they chose him. After Jaylen Brown in 2016, he was the Celtics’ second consecutive No. 3 pick for a small forward. He demonstrated his skills at the 2017 NBA Summer League in Utah when he averaged 18.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals, and 2.0 assists in about 33 minutes of play.
Tatum later turned up comparable performances in Las Vegas, averaging 17.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.8 blocks in over 32 minutes of play for the three games he was permitted to participate in.
Along with Wayne Selden Jr., Kyle Kuzma, Bryn Forbes, and Cheick Diallo, he was chosen to the All-Summer League Second Team. In a 102–99 loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tatum recorded a double-double as the team’s starting power forward with 14 points and ten rebounds.

With a 55–27 record at the end of the regular season, the Celtics were the second seed in the Eastern Conference going into the 2018 NBA playoffs. With 19 points and ten rebounds in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks, the seventh-seeded team, Tatum recorded a double-double.
His postseason high of 21 points was surpassed in Game 4 and then again in Game 6 with 22 points. In Game 7, the Celtics defeated the Bucks 112–96, including 20 moments from Tatum.
