December 2023 saw the release of Season 5 of the well-liked reality series sMothered on TLC, which featured all of the typical codependent magnificence between parents and their children. Apart from every minute of it, the title of this show is intriguing.
It implies that a parent—typically the mother—is overly engaged in their child’s life. Stated differently, they are suffocating them. This is untrue because the adult children are just as involved in their parent’s lives as their parents are. It’s a suffocating two-way street.
Originally from Chicago, Kathy and her daughter Cristina share a five-house neighborhood. People often wonder if something is amiss when they are apart because they are so attached. In the Season 5 debut, we find out that Kathy is determined to celebrate her 65th birthday at a funeral home, creating what she refers to as a “living funeral.”
Normally, everything is well. Cristina is very uneasy about this notion and worries that there might be more to the tale. Does Kathy have a secret disease of any kind?
sMothered Kathy Illness
Kathy’s health status is unclear. Insufficient data is at hand to definitively determine whether she is unwell. We lack the information and proof necessary to determine whether Kathy is having any health problems.
Based on her live funeral plan and her meeting with her doctor, some fans have conjectured that Kathy may be suffering from cancer or another serious illness. Some have speculated that Kathy may be depressed or anxious or that she is merely attempting to attract her daughter and son-in-law’s attention.
We can only hope that Kathy is doing well and that she will receive the care and assistance she needs because she has not disclosed the nature of her sickness, if any, to the public or her family.

Does Kathy From ‘sMothered’ Have a Secret Illness?
Season 5, Episode 1 centers on the birthdays of the Crispino/Bertolli family. Cristina’s daughter is having a huge birthday celebration for her seventh birthday, while Kathy is getting ready for her upcoming 65th birthday. At one time, she considered throwing her party at a roller rink, but Kathy sensed something more sinister when she spoke with her.
Together, Kathy and Cristina enjoy organizing events. Cristina states, “We probably plan between 10 and 15 parties a year,” in the opening scene of Season 5. Understandably, Cristina mentioned planning the kind of celebration she hopes to have for her mother after she passes away.
She informed Kathy that they planned to decorate the funeral home with a different color for each holiday. For whatever reason, Kathy chooses to throw a “living funeral birthday party” because she doesn’t feel like she has enough work to do.
Cristina is initially opposed to the proposal, even though she brought up Kathy’s funeral first. Even when Kathy advises her to “pop out of a coffin,” she doesn’t think it’s amusing.
This party sounds like a lot of fun. Cristina was so certain of this idea that she couldn’t help but notice that her mother was acting strangely at her daughter’s birthday celebration. Kathy keeps nodding off, which is really unusual for her. “I’ve never witnessed her faint during a celebration,” Cristina remarks to her sister. Does Kathy have a bad cold?

Why Has Kathy Not Shared the News With Her Children Yet?
There are several reasons why Kathy wants to hold this live funeral birthday celebration. She wants to attend her funeral; that’s one reason. She believes her genes work against her as well. Cristina explains to her that her grandmother and mother both passed away at the age of 68 in an attempt to cheer her up.
The announcement sounds more like a plague on the family than a good idea, and Cristina is definitely not happy about it. The unfortunate news is that Kathy has yet to inform her children of anything else. As she puts it, “A few weeks ago, I got some news from my doctor.” Kathy is being honest.
“It’s not good news. It’s not news that you want to get at this stage of the game.” Kathy claims that she must “deal with” a situation that nobody wants to handle. For Kathy, it gets worse because she is unable to explain what is happening to her children. Right now, those who are reading this are likewise in the dark.
Who Was Kathy’s Husband?
Kathy and Joseph Michael Crispino were wed. Joseph passed away in 2019, ending their blissful married existence. Joseph worked as a businessman, and Kathy took care of her responsibilities as a mother and a homemaker. The pair made two appearances on the Oprah Winfrey show: first in 1990 and again in 1993.
With four televisions in his living room and a groundbreaking Sportscaster machine that sent scores straight to his house, Joseph was an avid sports fan who showed off his enthusiasm for the game. In the “Has This Husband Taken His Football Fandom Too Far?” In the Oprah episode, Kathy called her husband’s obsessive sports fandom “ridiculous” in a hilarious way.
Following his death on September 3, 2019, Joseph left behind two grandkids, Croccifixio “Cross” Caramia and Ciamarie Bertolli, as well as three children, Cristina, Carly Crispino, and Paul Vossel.
