Political Career
After receiving a congressional fellowship from the American Political Science Association in 1968, Cheney relocated to Washington, DC, to work as an intern for Congressman William Steiger.
Cheney was employed by Donald Rumsfeld at the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1969 to 1970. He then worked as an assistant director of the Cost of Living Council and as a staff assistant in the White House in the years that followed.
Cheney was the White House Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President after serving as Deputy Assistant to the President under Gerald Ford’s administration. Additionally, he served as Ford’s 1976 presidential campaign manager.
In 1978, Cheney was chosen to serve as a representative for his native Wyoming in the US House of Representatives. He chaired the House Republican Policy Committee from 1981 to 1987 and was re-elected five times.
