Actor Lee Sun-Kyun of South Korea, who starred in the Academy Award–winning movie “Parasite,” passed away on Wednesday, 27 December 2023, South Korean authorities informed NBC News.
Investigations into Lee’s alleged use of marijuana and other illegal narcotics had been ongoing. He claimed to be blameless. According to the police, Lee was discovered dead in a car at a park in the heart of Seoul, and the passenger seat had a charcoal briquette.
Following a tip from Lee’s management that the actor had left home after penning what appeared to be a suicide note, police began searching for the actor. Born in Seoul in 1975, Lee portrayed an affluent family’s father in the dark comedy “Parasite,” which took home four Oscars in 2020, including best picture.
At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the movie also took home the Best Cast in a Motion Picture prize. The sci-fi thriller “Dr. Brain,” which was the first Korean-language program created for Apple TV+, starred Lee in its premiere the following year.
His extensive resume in South Korea includes roles in the 2012 motion pictures “Helpless” and “All About My Wife.” Due to South Korea’s strict drug laws and continuous drug crackdown, some celebrities and other prominent persons are facing legal action. Lee Sun-Kyun Career
Lee Sun-kyun was born on March 2, 1975, in Seoul. His 1994 Korea National University of Arts School of Drama graduation class was the first. His theatrical and television debuts were as Brad Majors in The Rocky Horror Show and Lovers, respectively, in 2001.
After years in supporting roles, Lee broke through in 2007 with the critically acclaimed medical drama White Tower and the famous love serial Coffee Prince. Beyond Coffee Prince, he worked with Lee Yoon-jung on the sports drama Taereung National Village in 2005 and the slice-of-life drama Triple in 2009.
In 2007, Lee became a Health Insurance Review Agency ambassador and won a 2008 Korea Advertisers Association award. Despite his rising fame, Lee turned to low-budget arthouse films to improve his acting.
Known for his realistic portrayal of everyday life, Hong Sang-soo directed Night and Day, Lost in the Mountains, Oki’s Movie, Nobody’s Daughter Haewon, and Our Sunhi.
Lee headlined Paju, which earned him Best Actor at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival in Spain. Myung Film said the judging committee praised Lee for showing his character’s grief over adoring his wife’s younger sister.
Lee shed his “gentle” TV drama image with Pasta, playing a brilliant but abrasive chef, and the series’ success made him a bankable romantic lead. The one-upmanship action comedy Officer of the Year (Arrest King) followed Petty Romance, which reunited him with Choi Kang-hee from My Sweet Seoul.
