In 1963, Allen Collins got his first guitar and went on to play in a Jacksonville, Florida, band named The Mods. Larry Steele and J.R. Rice were members of the Mods. Ronnie Van Zant joined The Squires, a local bar, in the beginning of 1964.
He soon changed the name of the group to Us. We defeated The Mods in a local “Battle of the Bands” that year, and we came out on top. However, Van Zant departed Us not long after. Me, You, and Him was the name of the trio that guitarist Gary Rossington, drummer Bob Burns, and bassist Larry Junstrom created in the early summer of 1964.
Van Zant, Rossington, and Burns—three teens who played on opposing baseball teams—became friends later in the summer of 1964. When Burns was hurt by a ball that Van Zant hit, the three agreed to get together and jam.
They played “Time Is on My Side” by The Rolling Stones after setting up their gear in Burns’ parents’ carport. They decided right away to start a band since they liked what they heard. Larry Junstrom, a bassist, completed the group.
