Meg Ryan’s Career
Ryan made her screen debut in director George Cukor’s last picture, Rich and Famous, in 1981. From 1982 to 1984, she portrayed Betsy Stewart on the daytime drama As the World Turns, where her character was part of a well-liked romantic storyline.
In the early 1980s, she also made appearances in a few TV ads for brands like Burger King and Aim toothpaste. Following were appearances in a number of television shows and lesser motion pictures, such as Amityville 3-D, Armed and Dangerous, and Charles in Charge. Ryan received her first nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in Promised Land (1987).
She portrayed Carole Bradshaw, the spouse of naval flying lieutenant Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards in the 1986 film Top Gun.
In the 2022 follow-up, Top Gun: Maverick, Miles Teller’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Tom Cruise’s character Pete “Rooster” Bradshaw (a grown son of the Bradshaws) relived scenes with them as flashbacks to highlight the emotional tensions between them.
