Michael Bolton’s Career
In 1975, Bolton started recording at Tulsa’s The Church Studio. Using his birth name of Bolotin, he self-titled this debut album. He initially concentrated on hard rock, opening tours for heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne with his band Blackjack.
Bolton allegedly tried out for the lead vocalist role in Osbourne’s former band, Black Sabbath, in 1983 but was turned down. Later on, Bolton denied this, saying, “I don’t know how on earth it started, but that rumor about me auditioning for Black Sabbath was only a rumor.”
Rapper Kanye West sampled Michael Bolton’s 1980 song “Maybe It’s the Power of Love” with Blackjack for his song “Never Let Me Down” in 2015.
Upon adopting the anglicized version of his family name, Bolton achieved his first significant hit as a songwriter when he co-wrote “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” for Laura Branigan, who was previously best known for her performance of the famous song “Gloria.”
Branigan elevated the song to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1983, despite it just missing the Top 10 on the US pop chart. They both wanted to collaborate once more and in 1985, Bolton co-wrote “I Found Someone” for Branigan.
Even though her rendition was just a modest hit, Cher revived the song and her singing career two years later. For both performers, Bolton co-wrote a number of other tracks. In 1988, Bolton released a version of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” that peaked at number one on the Hot 100 chart.
