Trevor Strnad, the Black Dahlia Murder’s lead singer and founding member, died at the age of 41. His bandmates shared the news on their official Instagram page on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Trevor Scott Strnad. Beloved son, brother, and Shepard of good times, he was loved by all that met him,” the group wrote.
Strnad has been described as a “walking encyclopedia of all things music. He was a hugger, a writer, and truly one of the world’s greatest entertainers. His lyrics provided the world with stories and spells and horror and whimsy. It was his life to be your show.”
Prior to Strnad’s death, the band had gone through several lineup changes, with Strnad and guitarist Brian Eschbach remaining as the only original members. The name of the group is derived from the gruesome (and unsolved) 1947 murder of 22-year-old actress Elizabeth Short, which captivated and terrified the Los Angeles public.

The Black Dahlia Murder Debut
The Black Dahlia Murder made its debut on Metal Blade Records in 2003 with Unhallowed, and the label has remained their home to this day. In the years since, they’ve released eight additional full-length albums, the most recent being Verminous in 2019. According to Strnad, the Black Dahlia Murder is a constantly evolving organism, with the group’s most recent LP being “the biggest evolutionary leap we’ve ever taken.”
Strnad said, “It’s a very colorful, moody, and charismatic album that experiments with new sounds and ideas without losing the cutthroat Black Dahlia edge. There is a lot of minutiae to digest. Plenty of delicious little Easter eggs woven into the fabric of each song. Each one is a living, breathing entity that will stand on its own as some of the best music this band has ever created… We want an album to feel like a wild ride. A journey from beginning to end that has peaks and valleys.”
After years of popularity, the band’s fan base grew significantly. The Black Dahlia Murder was set to tour with Verminous this August. It is still unclear whether the tour will go forward, but supporters are hoping for an official statement. In the case of Strnad, many admirers have expressed their amazement and condolences on Twitter.

Trevor Strnad was such a tremendous force in the Metal scene. Not just as a frontman, but as an asset to the community. The amount of work that man put in lifting up smaller bands in the underground was unmatched. He was an encyclopaedia of all things in the underground scene pic.twitter.com/SNj3iaMc2X
