Adan Canto, the Mexican musician and actor best known for his appearances in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Agent Game, as well as the TV series The Cleaning Lady, passed away on January 8, 2024. He was 42.
Canto died of appendiceal cancer, according to publicist Jennifer Allen, and he chose to keep his illness private. “Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever,” Allen said in a statement. “He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Canto began his career as a singer-songwriter at the age of 16, after being born in Ciudad Acua, Coahuila, Mexico, and reared in Texas. He then began acting, making his television debut in the Mexican series Estado de Gracia in 2009. Later, he made his American debut on Kevin Williamson’s 2013 Fox drama series The Following, starring Kevin Bacon.

On Designated Survivor, he played Vice President-elect Aaron Shore, Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla on Narcos, and the mutant Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Canto appeared in “Bruised,” Halle Berry’s directorial debut, as well as “Agent Game.”
In 2014, he made his debut short film, and in 2020, he will direct his second, a controversial western starring Theo Rossi. Canto died while filming the third season of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady, in which he was playing as Armand Morales. Due to his illness, he was unable to participate in the production but hoped to return later in the season.
Canto smiled broadly and laughed loudly. His acquaintances said he had a compassion and humility that seemed at odds with his massive stature and square jaw. Kiefer Sutherland, who co-starred with Canto on Designated Survivor, paid tribute on Instagram.
“It seems lately I have had to make too many posts like this one, but I am heartbroken by the loss of Adan Canto. He was such a wonderful spirit,” Sutherland wrote alongside a photo of the two of them on set in a post. “As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed. I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children. Adan, may you rest in peace.”
